spinels at Namya (Kachin State, Upper Burma) as experienced by
Ted Themelis. These photos were taken during his trip to Kachin

Namya township in the Kachin State (Burma)
Riding an elephant is the most practical method to reach the gem
mines from Namya township and local depot.
Gemstones are recovered from the alluvial gravels
utilizing the traditional Thai-modified pulsating jig.
Rubies, pink sapphires and spinels are the most
common gemstones found at Namya.
Red spinels from Namya. Some of these stones may contain beryllium
and other "light" elements.
