Febr. 5-11, 2008 TUCSON , AZ. (USA). AGTA GEM FAIR 2008. For 22th time, Ted and associates exhibited at Tucson Gem Fair and met with old friends, colleagues and clients. He presented his new book Gems & Mines of Mogok and the new innovative gemological microscopes portaLEDscope and maxxiLEDsopes. A limited number of beryllium-treated, lead and beryllium treated and lanthanum chromate treated rubies were for sale for educational purposes. He also attended the AGA Gemological conference as a panelist on gem treatments; he was the final nominee for the Bonanno Award for Gemological Excellence. The award went to Jim Shingley.

PAILIN (CAMBODIA). Ted, his son Angelo Themelis and Peter Grumitt were one of the few foreigners who visited the ruby and sapphires mines at Pailin in Cambodia. This is the stronghold of the notorious Pol Pot (Brother Number One), leader of the Khmer Rouge's cruel experiment on radical Maoism. BANGKOK (THAILAND). GEMMOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION OF HONG KONG. An update on the latest developments and related research on the beryllium-treated gems presented by Ted Themelis in Bangkok to 18 members of the Hong-Kong Gemmological Association. This day-long seminar in conjunction with "on hands" workshop revealed updated methodology with emphasis in inclusion characteristics and identification features observed in beryllium-treated corundums produced at hislab.

The latest developments on the ongoing research on the beryllium-treated corundums were presented to the Greek gemologists and members of the jewelry trade. One more time Ted presented his work to GLIC held in Bangkok his views and opinion on the latest developments of the controversial "new" treatment of ruby and fancy sapphires. A proposed disclosure statement was presented. The successful treatment of Madagascan rubies, Australian blue-green sapphires among other gems heat-treated under the "new" process were announced.

An update on the latest gem treatments was presented by Ted Themelis at the Gemological Conference in Linz (Austria) hosted by the Austrian Gemmological Institute. Emphasis was given to new technologies on flux-treated rubies and on the latest treating methods of " healing" fractures on yellow, pink and orange sapphires using hydrothermal processes. The latest news on the mad-pad sapphire treatment and the definition of term diffusion, bulk diffusion, surface diffusion was discussed. A powerful presentation.

MOSCOW and other regions, RUSSIA. RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE. Ted met with Russian scientists and colleagues in brainstorm sessions where the latest gem treatments and crystal growth techniques were presented and discussed. Ted visited a number of Russian research laboratories in the Moscow region specializing in crystal growth and experimental mineralogy. An enlightening experience where limited information on the new gem treatments would be presented in the near future.

In this Seventh Annual Conference (a major educational gemological event at Perth, Scotland, Ted Themelis presented his latest gemological research work on the new treatment method for yellow, golden-yellow, orange, orange-pink sapphires and an update on Mogok, its people, and its gems.
