Gemlab's model MB-1700 is a feather-weight, desktop furnace occupying minimum work space and it is the most economical furnace designed by Ted Themelis. The furnace employes muffle attachment of unparallel versatilty and impeccable design of its class not found anywhere in the industry. Depending on the configuration mode up to 2,500 carats of rubies, yellow, pink sapphires, and other gemstones may be heat-treated between 1200oC to 1700oC (1200oC to 1800oC for modeL MB-1800) in oxidizing environment (oxy, nitro or premixed oxy-nitro), or in air, with/without chemical additives or in vacuum. Reducing atmosphere can be achieved with the optional 2-gas purging atmosphere control apparatus purgon forming gas (8% ydrogen-balance) mixed with nitrogen (optional).

Three different options of loading the crucible to heat-treat your gems

OPTION A. WITHOUT MUFFLE
Model MB-1700 may be used for most common heating application without the muffle attachment where heating parameters are not critical.
.OPTION B. WITH PURGE TUBE
It is used where direct gas purging into the crucible is desired with selected or pre-mixed gas, oxy to enrich oxidizing atmosphere.
OPTION C. WITH HALF-MUFFLE
Easily converted to a top-loading half-muffle equipped with metal flange allowing gas purging or in vacuum.

CAT# V. Vacuum package: pump (3.6 m3/h, 5 Pa, 150 W), vacuum gauge, fittings and vacuum hose to be used with the half muffle tube.
1800-grade Molydbenum desilicide heating elements
CAT# W. Water re-circulating system. It is required for half or full-muffle heating processes over 1500oC. Includes built-in pump, motor 220Vac-3 A, 2.4 gallon tank hoses, ready to be installed into the muffle flange.

B-type thermocouple
Two sets of flange covers: One set sealing hermetically the muffle ceramic tube at the top; and one set at bottom. For half muffle tube one set is required.
CAT# A. Two-gas atmosphere control module, including: two 65 mm flow flow-tubes for purging directly into the muffle oxygen, nitrogen or mixture of forming gas (8% hydrogen-balance nitrogen) or in any oxygen/nitrogen mixture in fully controllable atmosphere conditions to max.1700oC. It can be used with half-muffle or full muffle tube.

UPGRADING TO 1800oC (MODEL MB50-1800)

Gemlab's furnace Model MB50-1700 has been designed and engineered to be easily converted for 1800oC furnace temperature operation upon reconfiguration of the following:
1) Change to 1900-grade Kanthal heating elements
2) Change B-type to 20/40-type thermocouple
3) Change parameters in the existing temp.controller
Al other parts (insulation, etc) remained unchanged
Standard package (Model MB40-1800)
Order: Model MB40-1800 as per above specs for model MB40-1700 but supplied with 1900-grade elements, one 20/40 type and one B-type thermocouple, one pc half (L=305mm and one pcs full (L=610m) muffle tube; pair of muffle flange-set, crucible, re-circulating water cooling system; full atmosphere control.
